As part of our work on Rainforests and Deforestation in P.5, we have been investigating the amazing way trees help make rain! We carried out a fun experiment to see just how important trees are to the water cycle and what happens when they’re gone. We set up 2 bags: one with a healthy plant ( representing a lush rainforest) and one with a dead branch ( representing what happens after deforestation). After a few hours in the sunlight, something incredible happened! The healthy plant’s bag filled with water droplets, showing how trees release moisture into the air but in the bag with the dead branch, there was no water . This helped us see that when rainforests are cut down less water is released leading to less rain and drier landscapes.
